Five computers are distributed in the gallery space, each running the Constellations interface. The visitors' actions navigate them through the network space. Selecting a planet causes that planet's associated sound to begin streaming in. The visitor can select multiple planets, creating their own mix. As multiple files are streaming, navigation in the planetary space creates a natural mixing - as a planet moves further offscreen, it gets quieter. As another planet approaches the center of the screen, it is heard more clearly. Each of the five computers has its own speaker system. The five computers in the gallery space then create an acoustical network. At one level, each computer mixes multiple files from net space. At another level, the mixes from the five computers are combined in a high level mix in acoustical space. The work in this case was not to present the music of one person, but to create a situation - where the sounds of many different artists are heard, piped into context, from general space to specific space. The visitors bring the process to term by creating the mix. Constellations then is a relection in sound of human modalities facilitated by the net. |
